Introduction
The ongoing opioid epidemic caused by overprescribing and misuse of highly addictive medications has affected residents in Macomb County. Within the county, drug-related deaths have been on the rise since 2012, with a total of 388 drug-related deaths in 2018, 257 (66%) of which were related to opioids. The county has been increasingly responsive to this growing problem. The Sheriff’s Office and local police departments are equipped with Naloxone, a life-saving drug that counters the effects of an opioid overdose. Operation Rx, a county-wide collaboration between the Health Department, law enforcement, first responders, and community action agencies was established in 2015. The data available are the result of an continuing collaboration of Macomb County Health Department, Operation Rx, and local partners. Our goal with this dashboard is to provide up-to-date statistics, analysis, and actionable data to better understand who is affected by the opioid crisis and how we can better target county programs to address the crisis.
